Or, if you\u2019re lucky, you can hear a rooster greeting the day with a full, mighty crow.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you look a little closer, this barn is more than that. To many, it is a refuge where people of all ages and backgrounds come together, roll up their sleeves, and immerse themselves in the natural world.<\/p>\n<p>For many more, it\u2019s where they can offer compassion and care to themselves and each other. It\u2019s the kind of journey\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gratefulacresde.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Grateful Acres<\/a>\u00a0founder and CEO Ally Kennedy understands all too well.<\/p>\n<p>After losing her parents, grandmother, and uncle within roughly a year and facing this grief amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Kennedy was struggling to heal. One morning, inside that same Middletown barn, she found an answer through one of her closest companions: her horse of 23 years, Miss Coolie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just noticed that our breath started to sync, and I was just feeling a lot calmer,\u201d she says. \u201cI just sat there with her\u2026had a good cry, and I knew in my heart that that second just changed me.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ca8251a elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"ca8251a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"914\" src=\"https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/delawa_mar_2025_a014_003.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium_large size-medium_large wp-image-8031\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/delawa_mar_2025_a014_003.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/delawa_mar_2025_a014_003-252x300.jpg 252w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/delawa_mar_2025_a014_003-151x180.jpg 151w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1760ea2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1760ea2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Through Miss Coolie, and the spirit of her family, Kennedy \u201cgot [her] clarity back,\u201d and brought Grateful Acres to life in June 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside a team of volunteers and several four- and two-legged friends, Kennedy has a vision to build a supportive space that incorporates the natural environment to promote community and self-care. In other words, it\u2019s a care farm.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Care Farm Network (CFN), care farming is defined as \u201cthe therapeutic use of farming practices\u201d to promote healing. An extension of green care, care farms operate under supervised, structured programming, providing agricultural activities and services for individuals \u201cwith a defined need,\u201d according to the United Kingdom\u2013based charity Social Farms &amp; Gardens. This includes rehabilitation and special education, as well as improving emotional, mental, and social health.<\/p>\n<p>While care farms provide an individual-first approach to healing, they differ by the populations they serve. Several furnish services to clients with mental or physical health challenges, alcohol or substance use disorders, and intellectual or developmental disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltimately, [care farming] is about participation and a sense of belonging,\u201d says CFN outreach and communications consultant Kate Mudge. \u201c[It is] allowing people to get their hands dirty and find value in just interacting with nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With roots in many countries\u2014the United Kingdom boasts nearly 400 facilities alone\u2014care farming is still relatively new in the United States. According to CFN, as of 2024, there were 283 care farms registered in the U.S.\u2014four of which, including Grateful Acres, are in Delaware.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A Bright Spot<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A program under the auspices of West End Neighborhood House, spanning 3 acres close to Route 13,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightspotfarms.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Bright Spot Urban Farm<\/a>\u00a0in New Castle knows about growth. According to program director Ruth Arias, Bright Spot was conceived nearly a decade ago to help young adults transitioning out of foster care learn about cultivating food and other products in urban areas.<\/p>\n<p>Upon expanding and moving to the Delaware Health and Social Services\u2019 Herman M. Holloway Sr. Campus, Arias says, the program shifted its focus to high school students, specifically those from low-income and at-risk neighborhoods across New Castle County.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7ed36b4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"7ed36b4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/delawa_mar_2025_a014_002-1024x705.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-8032\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/delawa_mar_2025_a014_002-1024x705.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/delawa_mar_2025_a014_002-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/delawa_mar_2025_a014_002-768x529.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/delawa_mar_2025_a014_002-240x165.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/delawa_mar_2025_a014_002.jpg 1327w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"widget-image-caption wp-caption-text\">Buford Duddy is a pig with a big personality, and one of the many beloved animals who live on the farm.<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1d51108 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1d51108\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cIn their neighborhoods, some of them don\u2019t have yards or trees, so this is a therapeutic space for them,\u201d Arias says.<\/p>\n<p>For 12 weeks during the summer, participants learn a wide range of agricultural skills, including landscaping, caring for plants in the greenhouse, and even customer service.<\/p>\n<p>As many kids move forward, Arias and her team are impressed with how the children build a familial space and make changes of their own in a little over a year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur whole purpose is not just to create farms but to have leaders out there in the world or in their community making a difference,\u201d says Arias.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Taking R.O.O.T.S.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For Talon and Travis Holleman, the commitment to reconnection runs deep. After leaving their careers in nursing and business, respectively, the pair moved with their two children from their hometown of Baltimore to southern Delaware in 2017. Their intention was to spend more time together and \u201cto go back to the basics\u201d and find altruistic ways of learning.<\/p>\n<p>Homeschooling their kids, Bella and Emmett, and moving to their 3-acre family homestead in Georgetown gave them an idea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more we got into [homeschooling, the more] we wanted to build this structure of activities that you wouldn\u2019t typically get in schools,\u201d Travis explains.<\/p>\n<p>After launching an after-school program in 2021 and hearing from community members who wanted to participate, Travis and Talon got the idea for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.roots302.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Reaching Outside of Traditional Schooling Youth + Development Program<\/a>\u2014also known as R.O.O.T.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just opened up the entire property to an educational playground,\u201d Talon says.<\/p>\n<p>R.O.O.T.S. allows children, teens, and young adults to get out of the classroom and into the natural world while building community through self-sufficiency and goodwill. Grateful Acres has become an integral part of Reese\u2019s homeschool curriculum.<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da41453 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"da41453\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Fulfilling a decade-long dream, Personti created a similar space in 2020 for women in recovery\u2014one that gives them the support to achieve long-lasting healing.<\/p>\n<p>Across approximately 17 acres in Seaford, 10 women in recovery call Impact Life home, living in a five-bedroom house overlooking open land and a silo and barn with pigs, goats, chickens, cows, and alpacas.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout their time, clients learn how to contribute to the farm and homestead. They also work alongside licensed behavioral and mental health clinicians in one-on-one, group, and family sessions, and take part in mindfulness activities and free time.<\/p>\n<p>Through combining agriculture with the 12 steps of addiction recovery, and creating a safe and relatable environment, Impact Life establishes a plan for restoration, sobriety, and resilience.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Burke, who has been living at Impact Life since November 2023, was initially drawn to the long-term investment in and support for clients\u2014and the barn full of animals\u2014seeking a change from the 28-day treatment programs she previously attended.<\/p>\n<p>At the farm, Burke took part in nature walks, bonding with new furry friends, playing games like Recovery Jeopardy.<\/p>\n<p>It was through connecting with peers and specialists that she gained hope and security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all fighting a similar battle, so we all can lift each other up,\u201d she says. \u201cOur situations are different, but the pain is the same, and the power that comes from that [lets us] know we\u2019re going to be OK.\u201d \u201cMy story is not harder than anybody else\u2019s story. Some people have had it worse; some people haven\u2019t had it,\u201d she continues. \u201cBut my story is my story, and I\u2019m working through that for me.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-471bf6f elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"471bf6f\" class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>Giving and Getting Back<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For volunteers at Grateful Acres, being a part of the community behind the care farm is its own reward.<\/p>\n<p>After starting to homeschool her son, Reese, in February 2023, Heather Wharton began searching for volunteer opportunities and found the chance to \u201cget [their] hands dirty and learn some hard work\u201d at Grateful Acres.<\/p>\n<p>With each weekly visit there, Heather has seen Reese become \u201cmore comfortable and social\u201d and willing to handle new challenges. \u201cWhen we first got here, [Kennedy] had small chickens she was about to raise, and he was just nervous around them,\u201d Wharton explains. \u201cAnd now, if they\u2019re out, he runs, chases them down, and rounds them up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kelly Dakin, along with her sons Liam and Ryan, says working on a care farm has benefited their own well-being.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a person who has
