Therapeutic actives take place at the Farm, which consists of a large growing area, heritage-breed chickens, beehives, a learning kitchen and a walking trail. They use organic practices to grow their crops; community volunteers, clients with serious mental illness and staff cultivate the garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"UNC CECMH - Mental Health Recovery Programs\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VhttpQDFWGg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The farm&nbsp;offers&nbsp;a variety of programs in partnership with the&nbsp;UNC Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health&nbsp;and the&nbsp;nonprofit XDS Inc.,&nbsp;including horticulture therapy, animal-assisted therapy, music, cooking, expressive arts and yoga. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Penny Lane&nbsp;is currently in the process&nbsp;of a building an affordable tiny home village for clients who may want to live permanently on the premises. The 15-home community will include amenities, food, transportation and direct access to activities.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"820\" height=\"622\" src=\"https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Penny-Lane-chickens.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Penny-Lane-chickens.jpg 820w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Penny-Lane-chickens-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Penny-Lane-chickens-768x583.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Penny-Lane-chickens-237x180.jpg 237w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Recovery and Rehabilitation Programs<\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Recovery-oriented programs include a list of complimentary approaches to traditional therapy and medicine: horticultural and other nature-based therapies, yoga, movement and breathing, expressive arts, music and healthy cooking. Therapeutic skills groups focused on symptom and self-management are also offered, but in a non-clinical setting with a therapeutic garden as the backdrop. The Farm strives to find facilitators with their own lived experience in recovery as peers to offer the various groups and classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These programs provide ample opportunities for meaningful social engagement that are important to mental health recovery. Lessening stigma and allowing clients to feel less isolated, willing to maintain their connections with other people, and capture the experiences in their lives that are most meaningful to them.
