{"id":9334,"date":"2025-09-11T08:54:51","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T12:54:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/?p=9334"},"modified":"2025-09-11T09:01:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T13:01:06","slug":"benefits-of-social-farming-and-how-farmers-can-get-involved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/benefits-of-social-farming-and-how-farmers-can-get-involved\/","title":{"rendered":"Benefits of social farming and how farmers can get involved"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Becky Harrington<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Care farming can bring diversification benefits for farmers who want to take on a social purpose and help bring extra income to rural economies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also known as social farming or green care, the term refers to the provision of on-farm activities for people with care needs, including neurodivergence such as autism and learning disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We profile some social farming initiatives, including signposting for farmers who want to find out more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pennyhooks Farm Trust<br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Marie-Read-with-chicken-and-student-2025-web_C_Pennyhooks-1024x576-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Marie-Read-with-chicken-and-student-2025-web_C_Pennyhooks-1024x576-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Marie-Read-with-chicken-and-student-2025-web_C_Pennyhooks-1024x576-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Marie-Read-with-chicken-and-student-2025-web_C_Pennyhooks-1024x576-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Marie-Read-with-chicken-and-student-2025-web_C_Pennyhooks-1024x576-1-240x135.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Marie Read with a student \u00a9 Pennyhooks Farm Trust<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pennyhooks.com\/\">Pennyhooks<\/a> is a 40ha organic beef and grassland farm, which provides learning opportunities for autistic adults, many of whom are non-speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It offers a much-needed solution to the lack of provision for people with complex autism once they leave school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The charity\u2019s founder, Lydia Otter, who grew up on the Oxfordshire farm, began farm visits when she was teaching autistic children more than 30 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Pennyhooks provides bespoke support for autistic adults to gain practical skills and a sense of achievement through work-based activities and to forge social connections through a shared purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is led by autism centre manager Emma Masefield, farm managers Dominic Hill and Richard Hurford, and an experienced care staff team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every student has one-to-one support as they learn farm skills such as rolling out straw bales and feeding the cows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are taught woodwork, and build planters and birdhouses that are sold in the farm shop, and take accredited courses developed with the Open Colleges Network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also carry out conservation work such as hedge planting, thistle digging and species recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The farm\u2019s aim is to \u201clevel the mountains that autism can bring\u201d to allow students to thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emma\u2019s Master of Education dissertation about movement differences in autism found that the way activities are set up can have a profound impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She gives the example of a student who needs to spin and move in arcs being able to incorporate these movements into tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Murray, who is non-verbal, wrote this: \u201cPennyhooks provides me with work in a worry-free environment. I am my true self when I am there. I am amazed in myself doing skills that have really useful meaning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With plans to build supported living flats for six people on the farm when they have raised enough money, Pennyhooks continues to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lydia says: \u201cWe have found that the farm is a resource that can make a difference to our clients\u2019 lives and we want to share it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pennyhooks has a course for farmers who want to provide a similar service, and Lydia would like to see financial incentives for farms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the perfect circle: the farm helps look after the students and the students help look after the farm,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Social Farming Ireland<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Walking-the-fields_social-farming-ireland-web_C-1024x576-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Walking-the-fields_social-farming-ireland-web_C-1024x576-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Walking-the-fields_social-farming-ireland-web_C-1024x576-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Walking-the-fields_social-farming-ireland-web_C-1024x576-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Walking-the-fields_social-farming-ireland-web_C-1024x576-1-240x135.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Social Farming Ireland offers structure and\u00a0social connection \u00a9 Social Farming Ireland<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The network of social farms across Ireland has grown from seven to about 160 over the past 10 years after a successful pilot led to funding from the Irish Department of Agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialfarmingireland.ie\/\">Social Farming Ireland<\/a> manages the national network by supporting and training farmers, and matching individuals who need support to farms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research and policy officer Mary Brennan says participants have a chance to engage in meaningful activities in a supportive but informal environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe activities on the farm also give a sense of routine and structure as well as social connection,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Individualised support plans set goals for the placement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those could be skills sampling, progressing towards further training or work, developing social connections, increasing confidence, or improving physical or mental health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not an employment placement and the work is appropriate for each person\u2019s abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Significantly, farmers are paid to provide the support placements \u2013 about \u20ac80\/day (\u00a369\/day) a person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Placements are typically with two or three people, one day a week for 12 weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the payment is rarely the motivating factor: \u201cThe sense of wellbeing stretches to the farmer. It\u2019s a model where the soil nurtures produce and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camphill\u2019s head of natural environment, Robin Asquith, says the farming activities can be especially suited to neurodivergent people: \u201cFarming is real, with real problems, real tasks and an end purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnimals don\u2019t judge \u2013 they treat everybody equally and can bring out a different side to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have seen people who are non-speaking start engaging and talking with animals; it can be a powerful thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/lamb-feeding-Larchfield-Farm_May24-76_C_Camphill-Village-Trust-1024x576-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/lamb-feeding-Larchfield-Farm_May24-76_C_Camphill-Village-Trust-1024x576-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/lamb-feeding-Larchfield-Farm_May24-76_C_Camphill-Village-Trust-1024x576-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/lamb-feeding-Larchfield-Farm_May24-76_C_Camphill-Village-Trust-1024x576-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carefarmingnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/lamb-feeding-Larchfield-Farm_May24-76_C_Camphill-Village-Trust-1024x576-1-240x135.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>\u00a9 Camphill Village Trust<br><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The trust provides a range of options, from day visits to residential supported living, working with healthcare providers, social workers, local authorities and private clients to deliver additional care where needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robin says: \u201cEach person is recognised for who they are, and everyone works together as equals, contributing to purposeful and fulfilling work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robin has found that some autistic community members excel in the dairy, following strict procedures around cleanliness and data recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also says the predictable rhythms of farming can be therapeutic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having completed his Nuffield Scholarship on social farming, he has seen how it strengthens communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBefore mechanisation, farms were the social hub of communities, but that\u2019s less so now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe way we support people on farms brings that back, which is important as farming can be isolating,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trust has an emphasis on farm-to-fork and sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The produce grown and made on site is used in the charity\u2019s shops and caf\u00e9s, and all community members are encouraged to access the fruit and vegetables that they grow together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are reimagining social care and designing an answer to a sector that is challenged.
